Festivals in Amorgos
Here are some important dates you should mark in your calendar if you would like to visit and experience with locals, traditional Amorgian Food such as “patato” and celebrations of various events:
8th May 2024: Festival of Theologos
The Church of Theologos celebrates its name day and locals serve up traditional food.
30th June 2024: Festival of Agioi Anargiroi – Tholaria
The church in Tholaria celebrates its name day and a divine mass is held followed by a procession of the holy icon. The village then hosts celebrations with traditional Amorgon food such as “patatato” and “xydato”, followes by traditional music and dancing.
25th to 26th July 2024: Festival of Agia Paraskevi – Kato Meria
Located in Kato Meria, the church of agia Paraskevi celebrates its name day. It is one of the biggest festivals in the Cyclades Islands bringing in people from all corners of the world. it begins on the 25th by preparing “patato”. On the 26th the feast begins with traditional music, dancing and endulging in this magnificent dish.
26th July 2024: Psimeni Raki Festival – Katapola
The Psimeni Raki festival occurs annually on July 26th in the main square of Katapola. Here, visitors can witness the traditional process of making psimeni, still carried out by local villagers. The festivities kick off with young dancers dressed in traditional clothes, accompanied by local musicians who set the tone for the evening’s celebration. Guests are treated to Psimeni Raki, along with local delicacies like Pasteli (sesame seed candy with honey) and Anevates (cheese pie). As the night progresses, everyone joins in the dancing, with the party continuing until the early hours of the morning.
6th August – Festival of Christ – Chora
One of Amorgos’s largest celebrations is “The metamorphosis of Christ,” marked by wine and live music festivities.
14th to 15th August – Festival of Panagia – Langada
A big day in the Greek Calendar which honours the Virgin Mary. In fact a public holiday is declared in the whole of Greece on this day. The feast features traditional local cuisine, drinks, live music, and dancing, providing a celebration for all to enjoy.
20th August – Festival of Pasteli – Chora
The Pasteli Festival, featuring sesame seed and honey bars, takes place at Loza square in Chora . Visitors have the opportunity to wtch the production process of pasteli, which is then offered to them along with Psimeni. Following the demonstration, local musicians provide lively music, inviting everyone to dance until the early hours of the morning.
